Good instructors are rare, thus it is also rare that students acquire a good understanding of basics before progressing to more advanced themes. But poor foundations inevitably undermine all subsequent work. Thus even advanced students may benefit from a reappraisal of the basics from a good teacher. The following workshops go back to basics, to enlighten you to subtleties, and firm up the foundations for whatever type of calligraphy you wish to pursue.
Roman Capitals Imperial and majestic ancient inscriptions form the basis of our modern letters. A close look at the proportions and spacing in the practice of a basic pen made capital will lead to some experiments with form, weight and texture.
Foundational Hand This is the script which has served as the basis of calligraphic education in the British tradition. Adapted from 10th century Winchester scripts by Edward Johnston in the first quarter of this century it still provides an excellent basis for contemporary formal use. The term foundational underpins the fact that once a student has a proper understanding of it, further development will have a firm basis.
Italic An analysis of italic rhythm in a form with rounded symmetric arches. The study will begin with the structural rhythm as an abstract pattern, and letters will then be strategically incorporated.
Italic Variations Italic is not one script, but a whole family of possibilities. We will explore a range of forms, with analysis of structural rhythm, from formal rounded italic, through asymmetric & more cursive forms, and also including pointed and gothicized italics. Encountering the same basic principles of italic in a number of different forms, participants will heighten their awareness of italic. This is the first step to developing a personal approach, as distinct from merely copying a style.
