2 or 3 days.
Level: Intermediate to advanced. Max. 20 students
In cases where a Celtic feel is appropriate, Denis Brown favours a hybrid
form over archaic historic forms. This involves blending insular characteristics with a more modern roman or italic.
We will look
at principles of modernizing ancient forms and practice a hybrid
Celtic/italic script. My 'Pangur
Ban' design features the type of script that will be taught. Another example is linked here. The
hand is appropriate for modern use where a Celtic feel is appropriate.
Tools and Materials: Broad edged calligraphy dip-pens (Brause size 3mm or 4mm particularly
suggested in addition to students own preferred brand), ink, gouache
paints, palette, mixing brushes, water jar, pencils, ruler, scalpel
or scissors, layout paper,
a sheet or two of better quality paper of your own preferred brand.
