GUIDELINES FOR WINDOWS AND MAC OPERATING SYSTEMS
Note- as different versions of any OS will have slightly different methods, these instructions should be seen a general guide only.

WINDOWS- click here or scroll down

Mac OS 9, (Classic)- click here or scroll down

Mac OS X- click here or scroll down

if you have a high resolution screen, click here.

WINDOWS '98 / ME / 2000 / XP

Right-click the enlarged image above and select "set as desktop background", "set as background", or "set as wallpaper". That's all you need to do!

However, If you wish to tweak the settings for better display, then later when you are off-line:
Right-click on the desktop and select "Properties" to open the display properties window.
Click on the DESKTOP or BACKGROUND tab. Check the "Position" or "Display"option to "centre" the image on-screen, rather than stretching to fit.
Click on the APPEARANCE tab. Here Windows '98 users can make the type on the desktop appear on a background colour similar to the image background.

Mac OS 9, (Classic)

Open the 'System Folder'.
Select and open the 'Appearance' folder.
To save the picture, drag it from this web-page into the Appearance folder.
Open the 'Control Panel' in the System folder
Select and open the 'Appearance" control panel.
Select the 'Desktop' tab and Click on 'Remove picture'
Select your picture image from the open window,
(if necessary navigate to the appearance folder to find the image)
Click on 'Choose'
Select the option 'centre on screen' for sharpest image quality.
Then click on 'Set Desktop'.

MACINTOSH- OS X

Save the picture above to your hard disk. To do this, press the 'control' key while clicking on the image above and select "Download image to disk" from the menu that appears. Save it to a suitable folder, (eg. into your pictures folder: / users/ yourname/ pictures).
Open 'System Preferences' from the dock or the Apple menu.
Choose 'Desktop' or 'Desktop & Screen Saver'.
From the Collection field, select 'choose folder' and navigate to the picture (quillskill.jpg) you copied earlier.
Finally, to set the desktop, click on the thumbnail provided of the image. The sharpest result will be to choose 'Center' from the options in the drop-down menu to the right of the chosen thumbnail.

If you have a high resolution screen, you'll get much better results from a higher resolution image- there are 16 images in resolutions up to 1920 x1200 pixels on the Denis Brown CD-Rom. I'd suggest the best way to use the free option above is to ensure the image is centered on screen, against a suitable background colour, rather than stretched to fill the whole screen.
