Although I think even traditional calligraphy must also be expressive, “expressive calligraphy” is a term generally applied to experimental genres. In my new book, BROWN Calligraphy, I discuss how rhythms of formal writing may be allowed to move a little more in freer work. In what I have termed polyrhythmic calligraphy, the writing is no longer marching reliably, instead it dances wildly.
